29 October 2016
Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 6 August 1752 84 VAUCLUSE. PARIS. Action. black. No 3355. The Compagnie pour la Construction du Canal de Richelieu was founded in 1751, with the support of King Louis XV. It was named after the famous cardinal Richelieu, statesman under Louis XIV. The objective was to divert the waters of the Durance River through Provence, for irrigation and flood-control. Every spring the Durance, fed by the melting Alpine snows, tore through its valley, causing terrible damage; it was known as 'Le Fléau de Provence' - the scourge of Provence. The costs of building thecanal were far greater than planned, leading to a new issue of shares in 1753. This is a share of the first issue, certainly rarer than the second issue.
