Description: Collection of letters written to Nellie (Ryan?) primarily from her brother Tenison Ryan, from the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Many of the letters are multiple pages in length and contain interesting observations of the area along with other personal matters such as the birth of a baby and the death of a relative. The letters are dated from 1875 and 1876 (primarily 1875.) "My dear Nell, Bell... has just expressed her most decided opinion that the population of this place consists principally of underdone savages... and I agree with her so far as to say that a more extraordinary lot of people I have never met..." Ryan goes on to give more detailed descriptions of their surroundings. Ryan was stationed there apparently to building a road or railway, "I only have about 30 or 40 free men working for me on the road... We have to do lots of blasting with gunpowder." One letter contains a couple of neatly drawn sketches. An interesting collection.
