Description: Cook, James. A VOYAGE TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN; UNDERTAKEN BY COMMAND OF HIS MAJESTY, FOR MAKING DISCOVERIES IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE… IN THE YEARS 1776, 1777, 1779, AND 1780. London: for John Stockdale, Scatcherd and Whitaker, John Fielding, and John Hardy, 1784. 4 vol. in 8vo. Wanting ad leaf at end of final volume, else complete with half-titles to volumes 2-4, directions to binder leaf at end of volume 4, 50 plates (as per list at end of volume 4, including frontis, folding plate and folding plan) and 1 large folding map. Bound in period marbled calf with spines labeled and decorated in gilt. Rebacked with original spines laid on, some light rubbing and edgewear. Ex-library with old library labels to pastedowns and a combination of blind-stamps and numerical ink-stamps to first couple of leaves in each volume. Contents generally clean with some light and occasional foxing, some offsetting from plates, several plates shaved, a couple of text leaves with closed tears, two leaves with corner-chips (no loss), larger folding map with stub-tears, one leaf with hole removing parts of several words, a few signatures in first volume a bit displaced, an occasional spot of soling but overall an above-average example. Very Good. ********************************* First octavo edition of Cook's third and final voyage.
