29 October 2016
Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 18 August 1836 LISBOA. Acçao de Rs.100$000. black. #400. No 288. The 4-page piece was originally folded, hence some tape-repair on the back. Also some discolouration. Small dividend stamps around the edge until 1861. This is the earliest public transport share ever seen, a true landmark in scripophily. Superbly engraved and large vignette of an omnibus, full of passengers, pulled by 4 horses, in the streets of Lisbon. The company had received the monopoly for public transport in Lisbon and its surrounding areas (eg. Belem). Its vehicles could carry up to 15 people. It continued until 1880, when it was overtaken by horse-drawn trams. Only three of these pieces are known to exist. Rarity 10.
