Description: Catlin, George. ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE MANNERS, CUSTOMS, AND CONDITION OF THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS. London: Henry G. Bohn, 1866. 2 vol. in 8vo (9.5" x 6".) viii, 264; viii, 265, [1] pp. + 310 hand-colored etched illustrations on 177 leaves, 3 hand-colored maps (one of which is folding), and all plates with guard leaves. Bound in original 1/2 green morocco over marbled boards with spine lettered in gilt and with gilt devices in compartments depicting Indian busts, tomahawks and peace-pipes. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Some small and light scuffs to extremities, a bit of fading to spine of second volume, gutters lightly cracked, bindings and text-blocks tight and square. Contents very clean with only a few instances of very light foxing. Engraved armorial bookplates of George Edmonstone McLeod to front pastedowns. An excellent example. ********************************** The special hand-colored issue of the tenth edition. Sabin, Howes and Field comment on the rarity of this issue, and possibly only 12 of them were produced. The hand-coloring is very well executed and thorough. This classic work presents Catlin's detailed letters which describe his eight years among Native Americans. A scarce edition in wonderful condition. [Sabin 11537; Field 260; Howes C241]
