Condition / Notes: This is the third edition of this work, with both volumes bound as one. The antique volume is bound in quarter-leather with marbled paper covers. There is stamped gilt lettering and four raised bands on the spine. There is rubbing and chipping at the edges, corners, and gutters, as well as to the bands. The spine cover is beginning to separate. The binding has been internally repaired with archival tape. The text block is solid. The first volume contains a hand-colored frontispiece engraving of Pawnee Indians. The pages show light to moderate age toning and scattered foxing/smudging, mostly in the margins. A second hand-colored plate of American Indians appears in the second volume.
