Notes: One of the most unusual and surprizing photographs in Clifford’s work. Thematically it escapes from his habitual pro- duction. The formal approximation is very similar to that which he uses in the bas relief of La Batalla de Pavia which can be found at the base of the columns in the Palacio de Carlos V in the Alhambra in Granada, in which Clifford played with de-contextualization in order to show us its beauty and its strength. This modern image, with its simplicity and power, suggests the approximation that photographers of the time had to the new German objectivity. It also ser- ved as an inspiration so that one of the illustrators of the book could copy an exotic landscape during Isabel II’s visit to Murcia, although the illustrator is a long way from reproducing the formal beauty shown in Charles Clifford’s pho- tograph.
