Description: Salamanca, 46 Vista desde el otro lado del Tormes, 1858

Notes: Photograph not included in the inventory of Clifford’s work published inClifford en España, un fotógrafo en la corte de Isabel II (1997) Only known image of this view of Salamanca in this format. Clifford’s description of this photo- graph in the catalogue (no. 46), is “Salamanca 46. View from the other side of the Tormes- This description differs from that in no. 47 in which we can find another image. This town will prove a rich treat to all lovers of architecture, and perhaps nowhere will rich and varied carving in stone be seen to such advantage as here, but they are fast falling beneath the rude hand matter of fact utility, particularly as, since the sequestration of the church property, the ruins fall into the hands of private spectulators”.

Artist or Maker: Charles Clifford (1819 -1863)

Medium: Papel albuminado, Albumen print, 32 x 42 cm, tiraje de época, vintage

Date: 1858
