Description: Chaucer, Geoffrey. [THE WORKS OF OUR ANTIENT AND LEARNED ENGLISH POETY, GEFFREY CHAUCER. London: Islip, 1598.] Folio, 287 x 190mm. [24], 394 leaves (Of [29], 394, [14] leaves.) Wanting 5 preliminary leaves (no portrait, Progenie plate, or errata leaf), 14 leaves of tables following the text, and leaf 3T5 (which is the divisional title leaf for "The Story of Thebes.") Center of title cut out and title provided in early manuscript, title laid down onto following leaf. Woodcut title and two divisional titles within woodcut borders, large woodcut of coat-of-arms facing leaf one, and leaf one with woodcut for The Knightes Tale. Full period calf boards, rebacked, corners and edges chipped. Prelims with some light worming (with partial loss of letters), margins a bit tight resulting in a few instances of catchwords or headlines being shaved, a few leaves with early notations in ink, a few instances of faded marginal water-stains near end, mild/moderate and consistent age-tone, Very Good. *************************************** Early Speight edition of Chaucer's works, and including "The Siege of Thebes" by John Lydgate. Adorned throughout with woodcut initials.
