Description: Netsuke, boxwood. Japan, 19th century

Detailed, naturalistic composition. The chestnut (Kuri) is being pierced and eaten by a hungry maggot. The grain of the chestnut is reproduced very accurately. Fine, dotted work creates a smooth texture on the bottom. Remarkable usage of the boxwood by the artist. One small breakage in the texture, however even this cohers with the naturalistic mood of the piece – possibly even intended, giving it a further realistic touch. Himotoshi on the bottom.
HEIGHT 3,5 CM
From a German private collection
