More About this Item

Description: Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A finely made blackware canteen vessel of a round form with a flared spout emerging from the center and twin perforated lugs applied to the shoulders. The surface boasts an attractive design program with two ovoid stippled sections on opposite sides of the vessel framed by an incised crossed tumpline and a narrow band containing a wavelike motif at the base of the neck. The black finish of Chimu pottery like this piece was achieved by firing the pottery at high temperatures in a closed kiln which prevented the oxygen from reacting with the clay. A superb example created by the Chimu culture of ancient Peru! Size: 6.75" W x 5.25" H (17.1 cm x 13.3 cm)
