CHINA -- CHAMBERS, (W.). Traité des édifices, meubles, habits, machines et ustensiles des Chinois, gravés sur les originaux dessinés a la Chine. (2e éd.). Par., Le Rouge, 1776. 30 pp. W. 20 double-p. engr. plates. 4°. Mod. black hcf. extra. (Slightly browned in places). First published in 1757. Chambers was the first traveller to the East to offer the European a correct idea of Chinese architecture. He went twice with the Swedish East India Company (in 1744 and 1748), publishing his designs on return, and was an innovator who firmly established the fashion for chinoiserie which swept France during the 1770's. The present work, based on observations in and around Canton, closely linking plates with text, shows pagodas, bridges, columns, interiors, sailing junks, costumes and a detailed plan of a Chinese house. - Colas, 595; Lipperheide, 1518; Kat. Orn. Berl., 2784.
