Lot 163: CHINA RAILWAY & MINING CORP. LTD
29 October 2016
Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 31 July 1900 Warrant to bearer for 5 Shares of £1. green, black. No 12. Folds with a few miniscule holes. One tiny edge-tear, repaired. Text in English and French, but company name also in Chinese. Decorative border with flowers, and dragons in design. We have seen a map of China, apparently showing the railway lines to bebuilt by the company. They run from Hankow, which was perhaps to be the centre of the company's rail operations in China. They included Hankow to Nanking, to Foochow and Wenchow, to Chungking and to Si-Ngan - a very extensive network indeed. However, since the company was deleted from the London Register in 1902 (only 2 years after formation), we can assume that the company never operated in any way. We have no info on what the company's mining intentions were. Needs further research. A recent discovery, not reported in any Chinese reference books and as such a great addition to Chinese scripophily. Rarity 12.
