Description: An extremely rare reddish brown glazed basin of Five Dynasty (907 – 960 AD); it is fired in up-side-down position on a 3-spur support, as revealed by the spur marks on the inner base; the unglazed spur marks and unglazed patches on the outer base show a very hard red clay body; these features distinguish this basin from San Cai pottery of Tang Dynasty; on the other hand, the thick reddish brown glaze that accumulates on the bottom resembles the brown glaze of Tang San Cai. Height 2 3/4 in., Width 5 1/2 in. Provenance: Dr. Robert I-San Lin’s Collection of Important Chinese Arts, brought to California in 1960s
