Description: This fine pottery model of a foreign groom was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is solid and made from a buff-coloured pottery that quite highly-fired. It has been "cold-painted" in various coloured pigments, good traces of which still remain. He stands in the act of holding the reins of a horse (or camel).During the Tang Dynasty, when trade along the Silk Road was quite active, foreigners from the Middle East were commonly depicted in Tang ceramics. This figure would have been one among a grouping of ceramic camels, horses, merchants, etc. Descendants of Middle-Easterners from this era now comprise a majority of the Muslim population in Xinjiang, China’s northwestern-most province. Height: 25 in.
