Description: Copper, patinated and weighted. Half-length portrait of Luitpold as Bavarian Generalfeldmarschall in uniform decorated with orders. The reverse signed "Prof. Ch. Roth 1878 München". Expressive, well-sculpted bust of the prince at the apex of his military career. Height 85 cm. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria (1821 - 1912), second youngest son of Ludwig I, was Inspector General of the Bavarian army from 1869 onwards and in 1876 was appointed General Ordnance Master in the rank of a field marshal. In 1886, he assumed the administration of state affairs as Prince Regent after Ludwig II was declared mentally incompetent. Prof. Christoph Roth, born 1840 in Nuremberg, died 1907 in Munich.
