Description: This is one of the rarest knife sheaths extant. It is likely circa 1840 with orange and remnants of black quills. If you look close you can see pieces and parts of the black quills. This sheath would have been worn around the Native Americans neck, note long hide string. This is a super sheath and difficult at best to find an examples. This would be referred to as a tab sheath (note that the flaps resemble tabs or ears on the top of the sheath). It is soft supple and minus the missing black quills in very good shape. It would appear that bugs ate the black quills long ago (they must have liked something in the dye(s) that were used to color the quills black!. This sheath, even with the damage is of Museum quality doe to its rareness. Don't let this one pass you by. You will rarely see another for sale at public auction. The original trade knife is still with the sheath. It has a carved or engraved bone handle and W Greaves stamped onto the blade. William Greaves of Sheffield was in business from 1780-1816. His sons joined him circa 1816 and all were in business together though 1850. Two great early pieces. As good as it gets for early Native American Indian material.
