Description: Massachusetts Currency
Exceedingly Rare July 8, 1775 Paul Revere Copper Plate Indent Note on "American Paper" - Only 667 Printed
Colony of Massachusetts Bay. July 8, 1775 Indent Note. Nine Shillings. Copper Plate Note Engraved by Paul Revere. Due Date of May 25, 1776. No Cancel. PMG graded Very Fine-20.
Fr. MA-150. This exceedingly rare Revolutionary War period, Paul Revere Engraved Copper Plate Indent note is one of only 667 that were printed. As such, the entire issue is vastly more rare, easily by a factor of ten, compared to the earlier May 25, 1775 issue, from which this same Copper Plate was later re-engraved by Paul Revere to print this July 8th dated issue. This important type is also illustrated in the reference book, THE ENGRAVING OF PAUL REVERE by Clarence Brigham. That monumental work was published by the American Antiquarian Society, Boston, 1954 with a subsequent 1967 reprinting.

Only a dozen or so of these July 8th issue notes are known to exist on this entire issue, inclusive of all denominations. This current note has a corrected "Error" serial number, which was hand changed from "No. 491" corrected "No. 441." It is whole and complete, the holder reads, net and repaired, as it has conservation to a sealed edge and internal splits. Overall, this major rarity has a well printed appearance. The text is fully readable and it is signed by Henry Gardner, as Receiver General, in rich brown ink. The left side marginal Indent design clearly shows the entire text, "MBC" (Massachusetts Bay Colony) in ornately scrolled script style letters. This note may prove to the sole example currently available to collectors for decades to come.

An important, historical Politically motivated Patriotic legend is located below the left indent vignette which reads, "American Paper." This may possibly be the only example with the entire text "American Paper" so readable and clear. Most notes seen have that legend at least partially trimmed off and lacking, due to the indent cut. An incredible opportunity to acquire a true Massachusetts and Paul Revere engraved currency rarity.
