Extremely Rare "Dutch Church of Upper Canajohary" Note the Very First One Penny on this Issue We Have Offered
New York. February 4, 1793. One Penny. "Reformed Dutch Church of Upper Canajohary." "Church-Money" Small Change Private Issue Note. Choice Extremely Fine.
An extremely rare small change, Private issue "Church-Money" note, as found on page 308 of the 5th edition of "The Early Paper Money of America" by Eric Newman. It is nicely signed in brown ink by "Jacob Maskell" as Treasurer. This note is clean and quite well printed on both its face and back. As with most of these extremely rare private issue notes, it is not priced in any grade in Newman. Only a handful or so are known to exist on this issue. This example appears to be equal to the Newman plate note, also a One Penny denomination. We have only previously recorded the sale of one note from this entire issue, being in our EAHA Auction of November 10, 2007, Lot 767, 2d, graded About EF, which sold then for $1,062. We have not previously offered a One Penny, the lowest denomination, and it is only the second on this entire issue we have for auction in over three decades. An important opportunity for New York Currency or Colonial rarity specialists.
