Paul Revere Engraved Patriotic "Sword in Hand" Note of August 18, 1775 "Issued in defence of American Liberty"
Colony of Massachusetts Bay. August 18, 1775. Eleven Shillings. Choice Very Fine.
Fr. MA-167. This historic 1775 issued Revolutionary War Paul Revere Engraved "Sword in Hand" note has a very clean solid appearance, having some printed details of Extremely Fine. Both signatures of Joseph Wheeler and Thomas Plympton are fully readable, written in red and brown ink. The printed text and designs are clear and readable. The plate was re-engraved at the central date being changed from a due date of August 18, 1778 to "1779" as made. The wonderful reverse side vignette of a Masschusetts "Minutemen" is shown holding a copy of the MAGNA CHARTA in his right hand, and his Sword at the ready in his left. Motto above reads: "Issued in defence of American Liberty."
This rare 11s denomination note has four full margins both its face and back, is well centered and is very even in circulation. It has some deft light conservation and has sealed edge splits to the centerfold. Overall, this important Paul Revere engraved issue note is well superior to most seen in its appearance. Any Paul Revere engraved "Sword In Hand" note is considered on of the great "classic" designs upon early American currency. Ex: KAGIN'S ANA Auction, San Diego, August 1983, Lot 157.
