Description: [FRANCE] Count Gabriel Cortois Pressigny (1745-1823) Vicar General of Langres , commendatory abbot of Saint-Jacques in the diocese of B ziers, Prior of the Priory of Commagny to Moulins-Engilbert , which it holds the benefit at the time of the Revolution. He was appointed bishop of Saint-Malo 11 December 1785 and consecrated 15 January 1786 by the bishops of Langres , Dijon and Chalons . October 14, 1790, he is served with the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and the French suppression of his diocese decreed by the National Assembly. Refusing to take the oath, he is forced into exile, first in Chamb ry, then Switzerland and Bavaria. Returned to France after the signing of the Concordat of 1801, he plays no role under the First Empire. He offered his resignation to the Pope in 1816, typical attitude of the survivors of the episcopate of the ancien regime, ultra-royalist and Gallican. Charged in August 1814 by Louis XVIII to negotiate a new concordat with the Holy See, he is recalled in spring 1816 and is named Peer of France then Archbishop of Besan on September 20, 1817. But he officially takes his seat until 1 November 1819. Often absent from the diocese, he died in Paris May 2, 1823. ALS, 1818, 3 full pages, approx. 7.5 x 9 in.
