Lot 413: CUP WITH HEAD OF A JAGUAR
19 November 2016
Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Wood. Pre-Columbian America, Inca, approx. around 1500
Rare piece, on which even the otherwise metallic bands are also carved in wood. Tall, upswinging cup form, mouth on one side thicker from where the angular, stylized head of a jaguar arises. Also the legs are executed, protruding entirely flat and angular, the long horizontally tapering tail forms a right angle. Especially interesting and rich are the age-related characteristics of weathering and patina; the image of handcrafted carving with a knife is still well preserved and recognizable.
