Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Fired clay. Pre-Columbian America, Recuay, Peru, approx. 6th cent. (time examined)
An remarkably rare vessel. The roundish, to the bottom sharply tapering cup form features semi-plastic relief, which shows two mythical animals. They are called "moon animals" and striking is their similarity to feline predators – wide jaws full of teeth and emblematic erect horns. They are four-clawed with sinewy, curved body featuring striped fur and long tail forming a spiral. On a black base. Recuay was a Peruvian highland culture, existing between 200 BC and 600 and related Moche.
