Description: Don R. Neilson (New Zealand, 1924-2013), "Afternoon Light, Arthur's Pass" ca. mid-20th century CE. A signed and framed oil on canvasboard landscape painting entitled "Afternoon Light, Arthur's Pass" by Don R. Neilson, one of New Zealand's most esteemed landscape artists. With his agile brushwork, Neilson captured the beauty of Arthur's Pass in the Southern Alps of South Island, New Zealand. Mr. Neilson adored the outdoors and specialized in plein-air landscape painting, setting up his easel at various scenic spots in Wellington and the Wairarapa coastline as far north as Castlepoint. As we see in this piece, Neilson enjoyed capturing landscapes at various times of day in order to depict how the natural light altered our perceptions of the terrain. Interestingly, in 1959, just a few years prior to moving to Wairarapa, Mr. Neilson became known as the first "Kiwi" artist to visit Antarctica and capture that unusual terrain on canvas. In addition, Neilson's paintings have been presented to many important dignitaries including the King of Thailand. A wonderful example from this artist's oeuvre, signed "D. Neilson" in red paint on the lower left, the title and artist identified on verso, a McGregor Wright Gallery label affixed to verso. Professionally framed and matted. Size: painting itself measures 24" W x 16.5" H (61 cm x 41.9 cm); framed and matted 31" W x 25" H (78.7 cm x 63.5 cm)
