More About this Item

Description: Edward Price (1801- 1889) - a pair, Shelford-Nottinghamshire, figures on the lane; Radcliffe-Nottinghamshire, figures, horses and cattle on the bank of the River Trent, a bridge beyond, one signed and dated 1882, 44cm x 76cm, framed Edward Price was the son of a Staffordshire clergyman who initially trained with landscape artists in Wales and The Lake District. While travelling to Iceland he was shipwrecked off The Isle of Man and then spent several months on the island. Time spent sketching in Norway and Sweden led to the publication of two books on his return. He set up four painting academies in The Midlands including one in Nottingham, witnessed the burning of Nottingham Castle in 1831, and was in charge of a voluntary constabulary at Newcastle during riots in The Potteries. For a while he was employed by The Duke of Sutherland at Trentam Hall. After living near Ashbourne and Sheffield where circumstances did not prove favourable he arrived in Radcliffe about 1868 and lived in Rose Cottage, possibly in Water Lane. It was partly thanks to his efforts in collecting the necessary funds that the Peel of bells was completed after the rebuilding of St Mary's Church. Noted for his vigour well into his 80s he would think nothing of walking from Bottesford to Belvoir to sketch and then back to Radcliffe.
