Commentaire : Fille du pastelliste Louis Vigée, Elisabeth Vigée-Le Brun apprend les rudiments du métier avec son père qui décède malheureusement en 1767, alors qu''elle n''a que 12 ans. Elle poursuit sa formation dans une petite académie de dessins dirigée par Marie-Rosalie Hallé, et se lie d''amitié avec la fille de cette dernière, Anne-Rosalie. Toutes les deux vont arpenter le Louvre et les ateliers de Doyen et de Joseph Vernet. Celui-ci lui confie alors: "ne suivez aucun système d''école. Consultez seulement les œuvres des grands maitres de l''Italie, ainsi que celles des maitres flamands ; mais surtout faites le plus que vous pourrez d''après nature : la nature est le premier de tous les maitres". Elisabeth Vigée ne suivit donc pas le parcours classique des ateliers et commença à dessiner au pastel à son compte très tôt. Au moment où elle réalise notre pastel daté de 1773, elle n''a donc que 17 ou 18 ans. Mais l''année suivante son atelier est mis sous séquestre pour activité illégale du métier de peintre. Elle demande alors son agrément à l''Académie de Saint Luc, dont elle est élue membre la même année. La suite de sa vie est un roman qui parcourt toute l''Europe de l''Ancien Régime à l''Empire, de Versailles à Saint-Pétersbourg.

Selon une tradition familiale, le modèle de notre portrait serait le marquis de Bièvre, portant un uniforme de mousquetaire. Les traits de notre modèle ne correspondent cependant pas exactement à ceux du marquis de Bièvre visibles sur d''autres portraits.

Nous remercions Monsieur Neil Jeffares qui nous a signalé que cet uniforme de velours rouge galonné d''argent appartenait à la seconde compagnie des Mousquetaires du roi. Les uniformes de la première compagnie de Mousquetaires, à laquelle appartenait le marquis de Bièvre, était quant à eux ornés de boutonnières dorées.

Nous remercions Monsieur Joseph Baillio de nous avoir aimablement confirmé l''authenticité de ce pastel. Il sera inclus dans le catalogue raisonné de l''artiste aujourd''hui en préparation.
