In May 1855 an American relief expedition was sent under command of Lt. Henry Hartstene, USN, that found Kane and his crew in Godhaven and returned them to the US in October 1855.
This volume contains the first publications related to the Kane and Hartstene expeditions (p. 17-19, 23, 44-52, and 52-68) and is dated December 31, 1855. It is the only source of information on the Hartstene relief expedition, but it is the first of four contemporary printings of Kane's report to the Secretary of the Navy, Washington (p. 52-68)."
