Lot 77: Elvis Presley Double-Signed Postcard - Signed While Stationed in Germany
29 October 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
A German fan memento from Elvis' time stationed in Germany, the offered German postcard for "Elvis Presley in dem MGM film Rhythmus hinter Gilterne" is signed with a large, dark, bold "Elvis Presley" signature on the back. It is presented in a framed display with copies of two black-and-white images of Elvis during the period and a letter from Guido Leitgebel which states:
I have bought the above Elvis Presley Autograph of a Woman from a Town near Hannover, Germany on November 18th, 2000. This Woman made herself 1959 [sic] on the way to Bad Nauheim where Elvis lived while he was stationed in Friedberg, Germany, between 1958 and 1960, to meet him. She met Elvis in Bad Nauheim on his daily Autograph Hour between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. in front of his House where he signed this "Jailhouse Rock" postcard for her. First he signed the Front of the Card but the Pen failed on the glossy Card. But you can see the Autograph was pressed in by the Pen completely. That's why Elvis signed once more on the Back of the Postcard. The Woman had of a whole Album full with autographs of stars from this time.
Interestingly, the postcard is actually signed on the front as well, but the signature is only partially readable due to the pen not properly applying the ink on the glossy surface. The impression of this first attempt can be seen if the card is held at an angle - a photo is shown here. A color copy of the front of the postcard is presented in the framed display, and viewers can see the partial signature that caused Elvis to flip the piece over and give it another try. This early autograph from Elvis' time in Germany acquired by a local on a German postcard is a fitting foreign keepsake from one of Elvis' only times overseas. The postcard measures 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches (8.89 x 13.97 cm), and the framed display measures 20 1/2 by 18 inches (52.07 x 45.72 cm). Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The postcard presents with few if any defects. Near Mint condition.
