Lot 56: Elvis Presley Gold and Diamond Ring Gifted to Sam Thompson Backstage, Saturday, June 25, 1977 at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum
29 October 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
In June of 1977 Elvis traveled from Madison, Wisconsin where he performed on Friday the 24th direct to Cincinnati, Ohio where he performed at the Riverfront Coliseum on Saturday the 25th. The stay in Cincinnati was memorable not only for his energetic performance that evening, but because Elvis and his entourage set off on foot to find a new hotel when the air conditioning failed in the one where they were staying.
Just before the show at the Coliseum, Elvis gave Sam Thompson the ring right off his finger, the details of which are recalled by Sam in a letter that comes with the ring: "During this time, before the evening show in Cincinnati, OH on Saturday, June 25th, 1977 and while backstage at the Riverfront Coliseum, Elvis removed a ring he was wearing and complained it was slipping off his finger. He was wearing it on his middle finger and even with several band aids, the ring was too large. He handed it to me just before he left the dressing room and went on stage." This 14-karat yellow gold ring with white gold flanking weighs 13.8 grams, with 16 diamonds each weighing 0.15 carat. At size 14, it's no wonder this ring was so ill-fitting on the hand of Elvis, who wore a much smaller size. The ring is also accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The ring shows only minor wear in the form of a few scuffs. Near Mint condition.
