Serwouters & 29 (of 30) full-p. engr. emblems attributed to C. LeBlon w. engr. mottoes in Dutch, Latin and French; disticha in Dutch French (transl. by R.J. de Nérée) and Latin (by C.G. Plemp) on facing page. 8°-obl. 19th c. h. vellum. (2 lvs. (p. 11-14) lack, (but p. 11 = blank), ti-p. a bit stained/soiled, lower outer blank corner of last leaf renewed, margins a bit thumbed/soiled in places, slightly browned). Very rare first edition of this landmark in the history of Dutch literature and hardly ever found complete. - Landwehr, Emblem & Fable Bks, 320; Scheurleer, 140; Leendertz, 17; De Vries, 48; Visser, 234; Praz, 371-72. "Hooft's emblems are original in that they are not derived immediately from his predecessors, but are freely inspired by the same or similar themes." (Praz, p. 124).
