More About this Item

Description: 27 Pluviôse an IV 21 COTE-D'OR. DIJON/BEAUME. Emprunt Forcé - Quittance de 1000 Fr. black. Central fold. Damaged right border with repaired tear. Issued in the commune of Beaume (Aisne). A promissory note to pay 1000 Francs for the holder of this document in return for his efforts to sell the forced loan of an IV in his canton. Issued 16 February 1796. This loan was levied on wealthier citizens of each department. It brought two advantages to the state – it funded the various caisses, and reduced the number of assignats in circulation. A later decision by the Directoire authorised the issue of ‘rescriptions’, in effect paper money, based on the receipts of the loan.
