Fred Arthur Farrell (England, 1882-1935), ca. 1920s. An original etching, signed in pencil in the lower margin, depicting a trio of gondoliers rowing along Venice's Grand Canal amidst all its architectural splendor. On the verso is an old label from Anderson Galleries in Chicago with the following hand-written identification, "Grand Canal Venice - Arthur J. Farrell - Original Etching". Frederick Arthur "Fred" Farrell was a British artist who interestingly enough also served as the official war artist of Glasgow during World War One. His father was the curator at Trades House in Glasgow. Though trained as a civil engineer, Farrell was a self-taught artist who created both watercolors and etchings. Recently Mr. Farrell's work has been gaining increasing attention. In 2014, an exhibition of his work entitled "Fred. A. Farrell: Glasgow's War Artist" was held at The People's Palace in Glasgow, the first since 1920. A meticulously detailed etching, framed and matted under glass, replete with fine technique and artistry, by an artist who is gaining renewed enthusiasm. Size: image measures 11" L x 10" W (27.9 cm x 25.4 cm); matted and framed 17.75" L x 16.5" W (45.1 cm x 41.9 cm)
