Other Notes: In 1897, Mora was twenty-three years old, and working as an instructor at the Chase School of Art in New York City. The school was named for its owner, William Merritt Chase, who was Mora''s mentor. In homage to Chase, the background relief in Mora''s self-portrait is painted in the Impressionist style. The figure is Realistic, as were all of Mora''s figures in that era. Thanks to Lynne Pauls Baron author of "F. Luis Mora, America''s First Hispanic Master," for her assistance in cataloging this lot.
