Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 1859, 1863 BRUXELLES. 1. Action de F500, black, 1859. 2. Obligation de F500, green & black, 1863. The French engineer, Chenot, invented a method of steel-production by treating iron-ore by a natural and direct process. Charles Biourge and Edmond Puissant d'Agrimont, of the Belgian iron company, La Providence, saw the process at the Paris world exhibition, and acquired the Belgian rights to the process. This company was formed to exploit the rights, and Biourge and Puissant d'Agimont became two of the directors. Both havesigned the share, along with the president, H. Dumon. In 1858 the company amalgamated with the French company formed to exploit the rights in France. At first, the steel was produced in a Charleroi plant, belonging to La Providence, but the company built its own, at Couillet; the construction and operation was supervised by Alfred Chenot, son of the inventor.
