Description: A FINE ICON SHOWING THE PROTECTING VEIL OF THE MOTHER OF GOD (POKROV) WITH SILVER-GILT OKLAD Russland, 1. Hälfte 18. Jh. (Ikone), Russland, Moskau, 1744 (Oklad) Russian, 1st half 18th century (icon), Russian, Moscow, 1744 (oklad) Einzeltafel mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki (einer verloren). Doppeltes Kowtscheg, Eitempera Tempera on wood panel with double kovcheg. Traditionally painted. The icon combining two subjects whose feast day is celebrated on October 1st: the vision of the Holy Fool Andrei, who saw the Mother of God appear in the air in the church of Blanchernae at Constantinople, and Romanos the Melodist, who lost his voice and could not sing well until the Mother of God appeared to him in a dream, gave him a scroll to eat, and thereby granted him the gift of song. At the top central section the Mother of God can be seen standing atop a bank of clouds within the church holding her protective mantle in her outstretched hands spreading it above the congregation as a symbol of her protection. She is acompanied by a gathering of saints turned towards Christ who delivers a blessing at upper left. Below Romanos holds the Gospels open for the Patriarch of Constantinople and at mid left and right are the Empress and Emperor. In the lower right corner the Holy Fool Andrei raising his arm pointing towards the Mother of God showing her to his disciple Epifany who stands beside him. The upper border inscribed with the title. The icon exhibits a great deal of detail. The edges minimally chipped, minimally restored. The gilded silver oklad richly chased and embossed with scrolling foliage on stippled ground. Marked with city hallmark and master's mark 'GG'. 31, 1 x 27.2 cm.

Punziert mit Stadtmarke und Meisterzeichen 'GG'. Teilung des Bildfeldes in zwei horizontale Register mit der Gottesmutter im oberen und Romanos dem Meloden im unteren Bereich. Das kräftig getriebene und fein ziselierte Oklad aus vergoldetem Silber ist mit Blattranken und Olivperlen entlang des Randes verziert. Kanten min. best., punktuelle Einstimmungen."
