More About this Item

Description: January 1857 BUENOS AYRES. Accion 2500 Pesos. black. No 2607. Huge vignette of an early train with passengers. The Ferrocarril Oeste de Buenos Aires, founded in Buenos Aires in 1857, was the first built on Argentine territory. Its first locomotive 'La Portena' was built in Leeds, England. The 10Km line ran from astation by the Plaza del Parque, in the city centre, to Floresta, in the suburbs. Acquired by the provincial government in 1863 (evidenced by a share transfer note on the back of the share), and sold in 1890 to the English-owned Buenos Aires Western Railway. This is nothing less than the earliest Argentine railway share we know of.
