Description: HARRISON, MARY LORD. (1858-1948). Second wife of President Benjamin Harrison. Free Frank. (“Mary Lord Harrison”). 1p. 12mo. (Indianapolis, May 12, 1913). A black-bordered envelope addressed to her former brother-in-law and Scranton Mayor J. BENJAMIN DIMMICK (1858-1920). ********** Mary Lord married Erskine Dimmick, the son of Pennsylvania’s attorney general in 1881 but was widowed at the age of 23 a mere three months after their wedding. Mary then moved into the White House as an assistant to her aunt, First Lady Caroline Harrison. In 1892, Caroline died, leaving President Benjamin Harrison a widower as well. Four years later, following the conclusion of Harrison’s single term, Mary and Benjamin married, despite their 25-year age difference, and settled in Indianapolis. Mary survived the former president by nearly 50 years, during which time she established the Benjamin Harrison Home, preserving the house from which he conducted his famous Front Porch Campaign. ********** Our envelope is addressed to the brother of her first husband who served as mayor of Scranton from 1906 to 1909; in 1914, he unsuccessfully ran for the Senate. ********** Creased with some light staining and wear. Elegantly penned and in very good condition.
