Lot 318: FONCIERE DE SYRIE S.A., SOCIETE
29 October 2016
Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 15 January 1925 PARIS. Action de F500. blue, green. #44000. No 25617. Superb design by Leclerc, in a lovely flowery and Islamic border. Views of Syrian cities, with many beautiful mosques and minarets; we see Damascus with the famous Umayyad mosque, Aleppo with its citadel, Lattaquia on the Mediterranean, Hama and Homs -all the main commercial centers of the country. Syria was a part of the Ottoman empire until the end of World War I, when the League of Nations gave France a mandate over it. Léon Leclerc was a very talented landscape artist from Honfleur, Normandy. Heshowed his work at the Salon from 1890 onwards. Arguably the most beautiful share of the Middle East, but sadly so much has now been destroyed. Large format share, part of the 22 million francs company capital in 1925 (not to be confused with the common post-WWII issue by this company, of much smaller format). Rarity 8.
