Lot 89: FRANK FINNEY RED TAILED HAWK CARVED WOOD ( DECOY ) BIRD OF PREY
TERRA INCOGNITA Fall Western Cowboy, Native American, Sporting, Advertising, Decoy, Gun, Knife, & Photography Auction
01 November 2016
Chicago, IL, USALive Auction
Description: 25" Long, 10" Wide, 13.5" Tall. This is a lifelike carving only as Mr. Frank Finney could do. It has fantastic detail both carved, relief carved tail and wings and also painted feathers all over! Hawk sits on a wood carved base with Talons extended. A true to life like carving, very eye appealing and attention to detail. Very few life size birds of prey have been completed by Mr. Finney. The wood base was signed Finney in script. Update:10-30-16 There is a line on top of wings (see photos) that is where Mr. Finney joined two pieces of wood to make the piece large enough to carve a life size or bigger red tailed hawk. So it is a joining line that has aged and lifted a small amount. There are no repairs that we can discern in this area. The photographic lighting, highlights the line. The line also displays the Hawks age, which is believed to be 20-25 years old or maybe older? There also are cracks where the legs join to the body of the Hawk, and his right leg appears to have a staple inserted (possibly the only repair) however we are not sure it is a wood staple or for that matter even a repair? You decide. Other than that the Hawk appears to be all original paint including around the wing and leg cracks. The Hawk has great patina that you can tell in person has considerable age. Thanks for your interest. TIInc JB.
