Garfield, M.C.”). 1p. Oblong 12mo. (Washington, D.C., January 7, 1864). To W.J. Ford of Cleveland. ********** Garfield, a lawyer, lay preacher, and Civil War general, was elected to Congress in 1863, remaining actively engaged in Republican affairs. He was chosen as a compromise candidate on the 36th ballot at the party’s 1880 presidential convention. Shortly after his inauguration, a disgruntled office-seeker, Charles Guiteau, shot him on July 2, 1881. Garfield died September 19, having held office for a mere six months. ********** Our envelope bears a black ink postmark in the upper left corner and vertical docket in the left margin. Dust stained with normal wear and in very good condition.
