Silver, gilding, turquoise. Tibet, 19th century
A beautifully adorned gau with a quadratic compartment which presents the four directions as large triangular applications densely embellished with turquoise. The sheet silver on the front face of the container is gilt and decorated with floral filigree patterns as well as turquoise stones. These are laid out to form flower motifs and a simplified kalasha, which traditionally holds blessed water. Precise geometric filigree patterns on the sides of the container, eyelets with ribbed rims below the triangular applications, on one side is a handle decorated with ribbed layers and also an eyelet. On the inside is a religious script in block print as well as two coins, the smaller with the buddhist Ashtamangala is from Bhutan, the other from Tibet.
