Description: George III: a rare, late-18th century creamware tankard printed in black with a profile flanked by flags, named ribboned inscription, flowers, foliage, scrolls and a urinating lion, 123mm, cracked commemorative, commemoratives, commemorate, royal

Notes: * Taken from the profile by Jeremiah Meyer of 1761 this print initially depicted a urinating lion which was replaced with a map of Cuba to commemorate its capture in 1762 from the Spanish. The original version was then re-used in the 1790s in loyal support of the outbreak of war against France. This creamware mug with its narrow foot and slightly tapering rim may date from between the two events. See Printed English Pottery by Drakard, pages 146, 148 and 149 plates 394 and 397 for such a commentary.
