More About this Item

Description: 1909 ROMA. 1 Azione da L.100. green, brown. #10000. No 436. Attractive zoo share, the only one known zoo scripophily from Italy. Wide vignette of lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceros. Intricate border of vines, with monkeys, zebras, kangaroos, deer, buffalo, and many more of the zoo's residents. The coupons show a pair of tigers. The zoo was founded 1908 in the northern part of the Villa Borghese estate (12 hect). The designer was German: Carl Hagenbeck. He had already opened a zoo in Hamburg. Various park expansions were undertaken in the 1920s and 1930s. After WWII the zoo began to deteriorate. In 1994, the idea was suggested to transfer the zoo into a biopark. As a result, in 1998 the Bioparco S.p.A. was founded. It currently holds 1114 animals of 222 species.
