Description: Gibbon, Edward. THE HISTORY OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. London: for Strahan and Cadell, 1777 - 1788. 6 Volumes. Vol. 1 (1777, 3rd ed.), Vol. 2-3 (1787, New ed.), Vol. 4-6 (1788, 1st ed.) Engraved frontis and 3 maps (two folding.) With half-titles except for volumes 4 and 5. Volume 4 apparently wanting 4 preface leaves though contents leaves present. Volume 1 with abreviated 2-leaf version of contents leaves (see copy in Haiti Trust as an example); most copies have the more detailed 6 leaves of contents for this volume. 4to, this copy with wide margins, approx 11" x 8.5". Bound in full period tree-calf, 4th volume with large chip to spine, others with chips to labels, hinges lightly cracked but all well-intact, some professional repairs to heads and tails (replacing chipped leather), corners and edges with wear. Contents quite clean and bright overall with some instances of light foxing in a few places, two leaves with discrete marginal repairs, five leaves with corner chips (no loss of text), and three leaves with closed marginal tears. A Very Good set. ****************************************** "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in inimitable prose" (PMM 222).
