Description: 26 December 1895 COLORADO. COLORADO SPRINGS. Shares of $5. black, brown. No 9. Remarkable design, showing two volcanic craters. Signed by Winfield Scott Stratton. Stratton was one of the first prospectors in the Cripple Creek district, and became its first millionaire through his profound technical knowledge and mine management skills. Stratton believed that the rich gold veins discovered throughout Cripple Creek would culminate deep within the earth into a solid mass of ore, at the base of the caldera. He spent millions of dollars, buying properties which, he felt, might lead to the rich 'Bowl of Gold'. The design of this piece reflects that concept. Rarity 9.
