Editor: Ada Goodrich Freer - Ada Goodrich Freer, afterwards known as Adela Monica Goodrich-Freer Spoer, was a medium, clairvoyant, psychical researcher and author. Much of her work was published under the pseudonym Miss X. Freer was investigated by the Society for Psychical Research but after strong suspicion of fraud was disowned from the Society. She was later caught cheating at a séance and eventually emigrated to Jerusalem. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia), John Crichton-Stuart - John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute KT, KSG, KGCHS was a landed aristocrat, industrial magnate, antiquarian, scholar, philanthropist and architectural patron.

He was a Knight Grand Cross of the Holy Sepulchre, Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great and Hereditary Keeper of Rothesay Castle.

Book Details: Freer was involved in the investigation of Ballechin House by the Society for Psychical Research, her report being published jointly by herself and the Marquess of Bute, who was the financier. Her work was strongly criticized by J. Callendar Ross in "The Times" in 1897, and led to a controversy over the bona fides of the investigators. As a result, her work was repudiated by the SPR, and she abandoned further research in this field. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia)
Condition / Notes: This antique volume is bound in dark green cloth, with a blind-stamped decoration on the front cover and stamped gilt lettering on the spine. The exterior shows some edge wear and rubbing along the spine. The binding is sound. There is a library stamp from Syracuse University on the rear flyleaf. Previous owners' signatures appear in ink on the front flyleaf and half title page. The pages exhibit light age toning.

This work contains two pages of diagrams of the rooms of the house, appendices, a Conspectus of Audible Phenomena at the house, and notes.
