Description: ** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **

Gotthard Graubner (Germany, 1930-2013), untitled engraving on wove Rives paper, 1969, numbered 18/180 on lower left margin, signed and dated in pencil on lower right margin. A wonderful engraving created by the German modernist Gotthard Graubner, depicting an intriguingly classic yet Minimalist rendering of the lower base and drum of a classical column, signed, dated and numbered in pencil by the artist just beneath the plate border. Graubner began studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin in 1947 and later moved to the Art Academy in Dresden. He continued his studies at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, under Georg Meistermann and Karl Otto Götz, where he would later teach as a professor. His signature style is quite minimalist and addresses the qualities of light and tone in simple compositions as we see in this depiction of the lower section of a column. Graubner is perhaps most famous for his object-like ‘cushion pictures' or ‘color-space bodies’ consisting of nylon stretched over fiberfill in softly graded, nuanced coloring. Graubner participated in the 1968 and 1977 documenta exhibitions and created two large color space bodies for the Great Hall at Bellevue Palace in Berlin. One of his cushion pictures also decorates the Berlin Reichstag. Size: sheet measures 12.25" W x 17.5" H (31.1 cm x 44.4 cm); engraving measures 8.75" W x 8.875" H (22.2 cm x 22.5 cm)
