More About this Item

Description: 1845 LONDON. 25 Shares of £20=F500. black on green paper. #150000. No 909. Folds. Text in English and French. Founded 1848 in London with a capital of £3 million or 75 million francs. There were no railroads in the Grand Duchy when this company was established. English investors were thinking of a trans-European railroad thatwould link the ports of Belgium to the Adriatic Sea: Ostend - Namur - Luxembourg - Trier - Sarrebruck - Trieste. The Great Luxembourg Co. was founded to build the Arlon-Luxembourg-Trier part. In Luxembourg this led to the construction of a (first) railway station: in Hollerich, south-west of the country's capital on a possible railroad line between Arlon (B) - Luxembourg - Trier (Germany), and under protection of the cannons of the Luxembourg fortress. A second connection would be towards Thionville in France. The company plans were however not realized, at least not yet and not by the company itself. In 1846 a new company is formed: the Grande Compagnie du Luxembourg. But again, the political/revolutionary late 1840s prevent the building. Finally, Luxembourg had to wait until 1856/7 when the C.D.F. Guillaume Luxembourg was incorporated, with French support, to open its first railroad: the Luxemburg-Arlon and the Luxemburg-Didenhofen lines were inaugurated in 1859. The oldest railroad share from Luxembourg, and only once before seen by us. Rarity 11.
