Description: Gustave PLANCHE 1808-1857 Réunion de dix lettres autographes signées à Alfred de Vigny [Paris], 25 novembre et 8 décembre 1830, [26 octobre 1831], 1er et 24 juin, 3 août et 14 septembre 1832, 24 févier [1835], 23 et 28 novembre 1856. Ens. 15 p. in-8 et in-4 (dimensions diverses), dont une à l'en-tête de la Revue des deux mondes, suscriptions et une enveloppe. Correspondance du critique littéraire Gustave Planche, redouté à son époque - le journaliste Philibert Audebrand ne le qualifiait-il pas de "prince des pères fouetteurs" ? - et considéré comme "l'adversaire des romantiques" (Maurice Regard). La première lettre, très longue, concerne la chaire de littérature anglaise qu'il tenta d'obtenir, à la Sorbonne puis au Collège de France. Celle du 24 février 1835 quant à elle revient sur son différent avec Vigny au sujet de Chatterton, pièce pour laquelle le critique fit montre d'une hargne véhémente qu'on attribue généralement au fait que Marie Dorval lui ait refusé ses faveurs : "J'entends dire autour de moi depuis huit jours que vous m'accusez publiquement de trahison. Je me dois à moi-même de ne pas laisser planer plus longtemps sur moi le soupçon d'improbité. En ce qui concerne les idées purement littéraires que j'ai développées à propose de votre pièce, je n'ai pas à me justifier […]. Si j'ai manqué à la vérité, ce qui est possible, car la critique n'est pas infaillible, du moins je n'ai pas manqué à aucun des devoirs de l'amitié, car j'ai agi loyalement. J'ajouterai même que j'ai gardé pour moi seul des chicanes nombreuses, que j'aurais publiées, si je n'avais eu à tenir compte des relations que nous avons eues ensemble depuis six ans". Les deux lettres de novembre 1856 traitent d'une autre accusation portée contre le critique : son ingratitude pour Vigny qui l'avait fait entrer à la Revue des deux mondes vingt-quatre ans plus tôt, ce que Planche conteste. Réponses aux deux lettres précédentes relatives à la Revue des deux mondes. Vigny se montre relativement implacable : "Vos souvenirs ne s'accordent pas avec les miens et il est bon d'en parler ensemble. Vous ne croyez pas que personne ait à rougir d'avoir été jeune, sans doute, et cependant vous semblez avoir oublié le temps où vous l'étiez plus que moi […]". Quelques manques marginaux dus au décachetage dont deux atteignant le texte. Important manque angulaire à une lettre atteignant les premiers mots de cinq lignes. Quelques brunissures.
