Description: Hamilton, Alexander; James Madison; and John Jay. LE FEDERALISTE, OU COLLECTION DE QUELQUES ECRITS EN FAVEUR DE LA CONSTITUTION PROPOSEE AUX ETATS-UNIS DE L'AMERIQUE, PAR LA CONVENTION CONVOQUEE EN 1787.... Paris: Chez Buisson, 1792. 2 vol., 8vo. [5], xxii-lii, 366; [4], 511 pp. Half title in each volume. Period 1/4 calf over decorative boards, title labels in gilt. Small engraved former owner's bookplates to pastedowns, early inscription in ink to half-title of first volume, first gathering near front of first volume with very slight worming just touching a couple of letters, one leaf with closed tear along margin, else a very clean and attractive set overall with only the very minor occasional blemish. An excellent example. ****************************************************** First French edition, variant issue without the introduction by the translator, of this classic of American political theory. This is also the first edition to identify the otherwise anonymous authors, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Another French edition, with a long introduction by M. Trudaine de la Sablière, the French translator, was also published by Buisson in 1792, and its omission explains the pagination in the present item. The present variant retains the original title-page, with John Jay's name misspelled as "Gay," and uses the same sheets from the other 1792 printing. This French translation was the first to appear after the original first printing of 1788, in accord with the definite sympathies which existed between the two countries. HOWES H114, "aa." SABIN 23993. FORD 18. GROLIER AMERICAN 100, 19. PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 234.
